These special individuals are proof that we can control moles in a respectful and more humane way without compromising everyday working practices.

They have worked to obtain the knowledge to provide welfare for the humble mole whilst still supplying the highest level of service to their customers.

They believe that the mole can be controlled in the traditional way of trap use as carried out previously for hundreds of years. This skill has been formerly recognised by the farmer’s landowners and people of the parishes of this country when old molecatchers were respected for the services they provided and earned the right to be called molecatcher. Now in the 21st century traditional molecatchers are once again being respected in the structure of the highest recognition available- the accreditation process culminating in the title of Master Molecatcher

The Guild of British Molecatchers respects those that control moles in this traditional way. If the control of moles by the use of traps is to remain an accepted method then those that practice this must ensure that they do so humanely and respectfully.

There will always be those persons that see any form of animal control as unnecessary, barbaric or inhumane acts carried out by the callous. As the need to share what space is left under the cloak of development or greed, there will always be confrontation between man and animals. It must be always carried out correctly and in the instance of moles there should be no excuses or exemptions to the rules that apply or afforded to other target animals.

There is a requirment for anyone undertaking mole control to address these needs and work to attain the best service and duty of care and promote traditional mole control collectively.

You may be a molecatcher yourself and if so may not until now realised just how easy it is to obtain the accreditation and work to earn the title that you as a person who works with one of Britains most secretive mammals could achieve.

There is without doubt a need for both opinions to be heard and discussed, animals will be controlled by man but both sides should accept the values of each other.

Working together can produce an acceptable working practice that reduces suffering and this accreditation is the “bench mark” for mole control. It combines the opinions and values of both sides and openly displays the professional attitude of many of those that control moles in the traditional way.
